As the holiday season approaches, Kutztown, Pennsylvania, is set to be illuminated by the enchanting performances of Berks Ballet Theatre’s “The Nutcracker.” This beloved holiday classic, scheduled for December 16 and 17 at Kutztown University’s Schaeffer Auditorium, promises to be a highlight of the Christmas season in the area.

The Spectacle of The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker, an annual holiday spectacle, is not just a ballet but a journey into a magical world of fantasy and tradition. This year, the Berks Ballet Theatre (BBT) marks its 48th season with this production. The show is crafted to dazzle, featuring lavish scenery, brightly colored costuming, and the melodic accompaniment of the Reading Pops Orchestra. Artistic Director Kelly Barber and Ballet Master Nathan Bland have co-choreographed this year’s ballet, featuring a mix of 21 company dancers and 29 students from the Berks Ballet Theatre Conservatory of Dance.

Star Performances

This year’s show features a mix of seasoned professionals and emerging talents. Notable among them is Kutztown native Jillian Davis of Complexions Contemporary Ballet, who returns to perform as the Snow Queen. Aaron Smyth, a seasoned professional known for his roles in American Ballet Theatre II and The Royal Ballet, will grace the stage as the Cavalier. The role of the Sugar Plum Fairy will be performed by Saaya Pikula Mason, with Daniel Mayo as Herr Drosselmeyer and Blake Krapels as The Nutcracker.

A Celebration of Local Talent

What makes the Berks Ballet Theatre’s production of “The Nutcracker” special is its deep connection to the local community. Many of the performers are natives of Southeastern Pennsylvania, embodying the spirit and talent of the region. BBT, founded in 1976, has been a nurturing ground for many dancers who have gone on to shine in professional ballet companies and Broadway national tours.
