50 Years of Magic With a Reimagined Nutcracker
Berks Ballet Theatre (BBT) kicks off its 50th Anniversary Season with a refreshed and vibrant production of The Nutcracker on December 20 and 21 at Kutztown University’s Schaeffer Auditorium! A holiday tradition for Berks County families, this year’s performances blend beloved storytelling with new artistic updates to mark the milestone season. Read on to see what’s new!
A Fresh Artistic Vision
Under the direction of Nathan Bland, BBT continues to expand the ballet’s choreography and storytelling. The character Hans, Drosselmeyer’s nephew, returns to deepen Clara’s journey, highlighted by a heartfelt pas de deux that adds warmth and a new dimension to the classic tale.
New Costumes for a Golden Season
To celebrate 50 years, BBT debuts brand-new costumes for Waltz of the Snowflakes, Marzipan, and Candy Cane. These additions, paired with updated visual elements, bring fresh color and magic to the Snow Kingdom and the Land of the Sweets.
A Cast of More Than 70 Dancers
This year’s production features over 70 performers, including BBT company dancers, conservatory students, and professional guests—showcasing the depth of talent within the organization.
A significant highlight is the return of BBT alumna Jessica Bealer, now with Rochester City Ballet, who will perform as this season’s Sugar Plum Fairy.
The ballet will once again be accompanied by the Reading Pops Orchestra, led by Dr. Willis M. Rapp, whose live music brings Tchaikovsky’s score to life with energy and richness.
A Tradition for the Community
For five decades, BBT’s Nutcracker has welcomed families into the holiday season. This year’s production honors the legacy of the past while celebrating the artists shaping BBT’s future.
