Seniors from 15 high schools vied for scholarships at the Berks County Outstanding Young Woman Scholarship Program held at Kutztown Area Middle School Sept. 25. Gretchen Kimmel, 18, Oley Valley, was named 2021-22 Berks County Outstanding Young Woman and Overall Winner, receiving a $3,000 scholarship as well as $150 for achievement in performing arts.

“I was really surprised when I won. There are so many talented people in this program and everyone is just so kind, intelligent and passionate about everything they do,” said Kimmel, who performed ballet as her talent. “OYW is a very nurturing environment that helps girls feel confident in being themselves, and I will carry the lessons and friendships I gained from my experiences in OYW well into the future.”
